A primary objective of the Center—and of many judicial outreach efforts—is to help ensure that young people learn the basic structure of government and the important role of an independent judiciary within that system. The Center has several initiatives that focus on engaging and educating youth on the role of the judiciary and court system:
Civic Education Roundtables: a series of conversations designed to develop a plan for judicial participation in civic education in schools across New York State.
Drug Court: Personal Stories: in this book, drug court graduates and staff from across New York State recount the travails and triumphs of addicts who have pulled their lives together. A school curriculum is provided to help educate youth about the important work of drug courts and to promote understanding of the justice system.
MyCourtsNY: a website for youth and educators about the New York State court system.
Supporting Youth Courts: initiatives to strengthen New York State’s network of youth courts.
Youth Justice Board: a youth leadership program that seeks to infuse the knowledge and insights of young people into the crafting of policies addressing issues that affect youth.
